Who’s your Nanny?

Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love, they depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog, it merely expands the heart. If you have loved many dogs your heart is very big.Image

All my life I have been surrounded by dogs. Small, medium, too big to call it a dog, aggressive, kind, playful and many others…Because my grandfather was a vet it gave me the possibility to understand dogs better.

Saya (the Staffy) is 3 and she is the most amazing creature on this planet. When I was pregnant she already knew before me. She sniffed my belly constantly and slept with her head on my belly every time she had a chance. I was only 3 weeks pregnant. She was going to be the true best friend for my baby.

Image

When we came back from the hospital Saya was so curious she cried all night so that we let her in the bedroom to see what that little fairy in my hand was. In the first 2-3 months Saya was not aloud in our bedroom where the baby was, we felt she should know boundaries. My daughter is 6 months and 2 weeks and still, Saya knows, the bedroom is my daughter’s territory. Usually when we go out I take my dogs with me and Saya is the only one standing so close to the pushchair, no one feels safe to come closer….I like that. I do not have to tell people that my daughter in the pushchair is not a toy.

Experts recommend that you prepare the family dog before the baby arrives. It is a very hectic time and a time of many changes when a baby arrives. In order to minimize stress for the dog and reduce the chance of an accident you can make many changes and preparations ahead of time so that the transition is easier for you and the dog.

I don’t have fingers to count how many times people told me to avoid dogs when I was pregnant…I still don’t understand. They told me “It is not good for the baby”. Saya is clean and vaccinated every 3 months anti parasites. Although I always use anti worm tablets we still go to the vet for a routine checkup. So, my dog is clean and healthy…why shouldn’t I let my daughter play with her? Reporting in the journal Pediatrics, researchers say that babies who grow up in homes with a pet — namely a dog or a cat — are less likely to get sick than children who live pet-free. The results bolster the notion that keeping infants’ environments overly sanitized isn’t good for their health. Previous research has linked the presence of pets with a lower risk of allergies among babies. At first I have to admit I was a bit skeptical, seeing my newborn baby being so fragile…But How can a person’s immune system be expected to build if they’re kept away from all the  potential allergens out there?

Image

These are my dogs and they are our source of positive energy. Not only I have 2 nannies for my daughter but I have all the joy and happiness in the world and my house is always full of love.

For dogs who haven’t spent much time with them, babies can seem like pretty bizarre—and even frightening—creatures. They make loud, screeching noises, they smell different, they definitely don’t look like grown-up humans, and they move in strange ways.

Make sure you never leave your baby alone with the dog on the first few months no matter how much you trust your pet. Remember, you want your pet to view associating with the baby as a positive experience. To prevent anxiety or injury, never force your pet to get near the baby, and always supervise any interaction.

Cereal killer Trauma

I have been looking for information on cereal and porridge and rice and paps and…for more than 2 months. Do you know the feeling when you go to shop and you feel tempted to buy your kid all the tasty looking (on the box) cereal with all the fruits from around the world? A lot of people are telling me that when I start my infant on solids that I must begin with baby cereal. However, I’ve heard a few others say that fruits or vegetables are healthier to start my baby on. Now which was is the right way? This is why I call it a trauma…

I decided on giving my baby solids when she was 4 months and few days. We started with root vegetables such as carrots, parsnip, and gradually added a second meal which consisted of cereal, mentioning that the milk was the base meal.   Between meals I gave her different fruit juices. Breastfeeding provides the best nutrition and protection from illness for your baby. For most infants, breast-milk is all that is needed for the first 4 to 6 months. Many mothers continue to breastfeed after 6 months and then give other foods as well. I did this at four months, because the breast-milk wasn’t enough for my gourmand daughter.

Image

So this is the Rice cereal we started with, I can be done with breast milk, formula milk and it has no added sugar or gluten. She loved it. I would like to mention that we were searching for cereal that do not have formula milk in composition. |You know the ones that have Milk Cereal written on the box.

The second one she loves is the Topfer cereal. This time you have a little bit of banana taste and the price is amazingly low. Image

This is also prepared with milk. Again I do not like to mix the formula milk from different brands. Therefor I can choose whatever cereal I want and don’t have to worry about mixing them and give my baby a boom of chemicals. I always choose the cereal without milk in the composition so I can use the same milk all the time. Mentioning that we use Aptamil at the moment

Image

So when you look for cereal for your baby, its very simple the “only water” ones have milk in them.

If you are a super mama try making your own cereal at home, so you are sure it is all bio without any surprises. Here you have some recipes for that. One day after opening a new box and realizing it was barely half full I thought to myself, why am I paying so much for a box of rice cereal when I can easily make it homemade for pennies per serving? And so I did.

Oatmeal Cereal  ( makes 4-6 servings )Image

I feel that organic all the way is the best to go to avoid many toxins in products.

Backyard fun in the sun

Now that it’s getting warmer outsideImage

this energetic mum realized that we have a Jungle in the backyard. Therefor I got out this monster and tried, what people call “cut the grass”. Lucky I had some help

Image

and someone was carefully watching me and giving me directions, although I don’t really understand what “bababaaa” means.

Image

After a couple of hours…ok, minutes; we were exhausted and decided to enjoy the sun.

The importance of Sun for Babies

Vitamin D is one of the important vitamins for the overall integrity of the body systems. Some call it the “wonder vitamin” and praise it’s virtues.  Vitamin D is very important for an infant’s health and for proper development:

  • Maintains the calcium and potassium levels in the blood required by the baby to build strong bones and teeth.
  • Essential for body mineral balance and blood clotting.
  • Contributes to the heart and nervous system.
  • Maintains insulin levels.

There are several main sources that provide the body with vitamin D: sunlight, foods such as fatty fish, dairy and egg yolks, and nutritional supplements.

BeFunky_null_1.jpg

So, when it comes to baby sun safety, how much sunlight is enough sunlight? Experts recommend that individuals with fair skin get about ten minutes of sunlight each day. People with darker skin tones will need slightly longer amounts of time in the sun in order for the body to produce adequate amounts of vitamin D. Most importantly, for the body to make enough vitamin D, the skin must be bare and free from sunscreen. Direct sunlight is important, so go outside and skip the baby sun protection for about ten minutes each day.

Organic food fever

ImageAnni Daulter – We love you!

It all started when I found this cookbook whilst being pregnant. It does not have recipes suitable for under 2yr old but it definitely has some yum healthy treats and ideas for us, mothers who want to raise our children without additives or any chemicals.

First of all, what is organic food?

Organic foods are not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents, or chemical food additives.[1] The organic farming movement arose in the 1940s in response to the industrialization of agriculture that became known in the 1960s as the Green Revolution. Organic food production is a heavily regulated industry, distinct from private gardening. Currently, the European Union, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan and many other countries require producers to obtain special certification in order to market food as organic within their borders. In the context of these regulations, organic food is food produced in a way that complies with organic standards set by national governments and international organizations.

Evidence on substantial differences between organic food and conventional food is insufficient to make claims that organic food is safer or healthier than conventional food. Claims that organic food tastes better are also not supported by evidence.

But when I say organic veggies or fruits I am referring to those bought from a market, or those picked from my own garden. here is widespread public belief, promoted by the organic food industry, that organic food is safer, more nutritious, and tastes better than conventional food. These beliefs have fueled increased demand for organic food despite higher prices and lack of scientific evidence. Image

~Our garden~

Now, when we go to a market we look for products that are seasonal. There is definitely no Kiwi fruit in March or no Cherries in February.  In this way you can pick your nice and healthy products from the local merchandisers. I always look after the people who have natural looking products, not after the stands that have shiny melon sized apples :). ImageImage Spot the difference.

You know something is strange when all the apples have the same shape, color and shine, but they are all tasteless. I prefer the ones that come in different shapes and sizes, the unique ones that have a wonderful taste. 🙂

For our organic recipe suitable for 6 months old babies here are the ingredients:

  1. whole grain pasta Image

2. 3 organic tomatoes

3.  2-3 fresh basil leaves

4. 2-3 drops of olive oil.

Boil water for the pasta. Do not add salt. Cook the pasta for 8-10 minutes (it depends on the brand, usually it is explained on the package.)

Peel the tomatoes and chop roughly. In a small cooking pot add the olive oil and then the tomatoes for 3-5 minutes.

When this is done, add the basil leaves and the boiled pasta to the tomato sauce.

Blend it and you are Done!ImageImage

The Sippy Cup Miracle

When can your baby handle a sippy cup? The big step happened for us when Hess was 4 and a half months old. Now, I know people might say that’s not possible, but I genuinely believe that the choice of sippy cup did it all.  Although she was still breastfed at that time, she had around 10-15 minutes to play with the cup and drink water or tea as the doctor recommended. In this way Hess was accepting the cup as a toy and continued drinking milk without any problems.

Some babies take to a sippy cup immediately, while others take a while to get used to the idea. Here are some tips on making the transition easier:

  • Start off with a soft, pliable, nipple-like spout, which will feel more familiar to your baby than a hard plastic spout.
  • Show your baby how to raise the cup to his mouth and tip it up to drink.
  • Give it some time. Until your baby masters the technique, you may want to put water in the cup to avoid too many messes. Don’t worry if your baby doesn’t use the sippy cup properly for a while. It makes a fine toy, too!
  • Try different models until you find one that suits your baby. Some cups have valves that are so effective at keeping the liquid from spilling that children really have to work to get a drink.

Experts say  “Never let your child take a sippy cup of juice or milk to bed. The sugars can pool in his mouth and cause tooth decay. The same goes for walking around with one in hand, nursing it for hours on end. A good rule of thumb is to limit juice to meals and snacks and refill his sippy cup with water when he’s thirsty.” Now, in our case I offered Hess only water or  unsweetened tea.

I was only 7 months pregnant when I found this cup and after I read about it, I thought its the right choice if i want my baby to learn fast how to drink from a cup; and it was.

Ok, so here you have the Momma Cup

download

mOmma rocking beverage systems for babies and toddlers offer some extra movement and fun over traditional cups. mOmma Baby Feeding Bottles, Sippy Cups and Rocking Cups have cool roly poly bottoms that weeble and wobble, but they won’t fall down, or more importantly spill! This clever design keeps drinks in motion, increases your baby’s motor skills and helps to strengthen their grip. Available in child-pleasing bright shades of green or orange, each cup and bottle in the mOmma line is BPA and phthalate-free and features a non-spill lid.

The SIPPY CUP FROM THE LANSINOH mOmma LINE that we have is the non-spil cup with the soft spout. Before I tried to give it in my daughters hands, I was giving her a little bit of tea or water just to see if she accepts it.  Well, drum roll please, Hess loved it from the start (4mnths and 2 weeks) and did not hit me in the face with it, like she usually does with things. I still wonder where does she get that strength from. Ok, so after she was able to hold it by herself (mentioning: the cup is really light) she actually reclined on the bouncer seat looking really relaxed. The best part, the cup is really really non-spil. You can hold it upside down, shake it or dance for your baby with it in your hands…not that I usually do that. 🙂

Summer Dress Story

Apparently if people tell me “stop buying your baby so many clothes, they grow up so fast” it gives me an even stronger kick to do it. These last couple of months I have been looking and browsing through children clothing both in shops and online. Unfortunately for my account, I cannot help myself even when I see something that will fit Hess when she is going to be 10 yrs old. All in all I am a fashion obsessed mummy and…no, nothing can stop me! […Ok I’m joking, actually I think I need help. ]

BeFunky__DSC0236.jpg

colajThe summer dress should define the inner femininity, but when it comes to a 9-12 months old baby girl, how can we pick the perfect dresses? We need  carefree and jubilant dresses. These dresses have us dreaming of warmer days, fields of soft green grass and endless time to run and play.

Time Flies

“The most beautiful moments always seemed to accelerate and slip beyond one’s grasp just when you want to hold onto them for as long as possible.”

Wow, I look at my daughter (now 6 months old) and cannot believe how fast it all went. Someone asked me once “What if the notion of time wouldn’t exist?”…I still don’t know how to answer that question but I realize now, when every moment has its beauty, that the bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.

So for every moment that might seem significant… I will share it with you, maybe if we gather our time together, it will seem longer.

When I first found out I will be a mother, I instantly knew it was going to be the best thing that will happen to me. Now, six months after my baby girl Hess was born…I admit, it is more than “best”
