Getting ready for Spring

Just let me say it one more time and I promise to stop…Spring is here!!!

We can say goodbye to the cold dark winter, officially on the 28th of March when the clock springs forward. For about 2 weeks leading up to 28th March start putting your little ones to bed 15 minutes earlier. Do this slowly, shifting the time every 3 to 4 days. The aim is to move their body clocks so they are falling asleep an hour earlier than before. And just as importantly you will also need to wake your baby 15 minutes earlier in the morning! This will help to regulate their body clock and keep your plan on course. We always try to start our morning with a breath of fresh air, and it really helps. Light is the biggest influencing factor on our body clocks and the production of melatonin, so as soon as you can in the morning get the family outside into the daylight, this will help suppress the sleep hormone and wake your little ones up.

We all know that Spring symbolizes rebirth and can be an opportunity for you to change things in your life or awaken aspects that went dormant during the winter months. The fresh air and sunshine will inspire you to enjoy spring and anticipate summer.

What I found really helpful for my skin during this period is rice bran oil. For a couple of years now, I have been using only organic products and tried to move towards a holistic way of living. It has not been easy but I can definitely see the positive results. Rice bran oil extracted from the thin bran coating of brown rice has been around for centuries. Even today, it is extensively used in many Asian countries like Korea, China, Taiwan and Thailand for cooking, particularly in Japan where it is popularly known as the “Heart Oil” because of its many cardiovascular benefits. The benefits of rice bran oil however, are not limited to the heart. As researchers across the world are discovering, rice bran oil has many nutritive and curative properties that make it beneficial for our overall health. It absorbs really quickly into the skin when applied, which makes it perfect for toddlers (they do not get oil all over your walls). Also you can combine it with aloe-vera powder to form a mask, leave it on your face for 15-20 minutes and see the immediate results.

Rice bran oil has been known as the beauty secret of East Asian women, and of Japanese, Korean women in particular. In these parts of the world, the oil not only used in cooking but also applied directly to the skin and hair as a beauty regime.

This is my number one beauty tip for beautiful Moms and babies, this Spring. Oh and also, for its skin care properties rice bran oil is also used as a sunscreen agent. 🙂

The Quinoa “fever”

Quinoa is a highly nutritious food from South America which was
considered in the past , the Inca's Gold. Quinoa was considered sacred and was used by the Incas in their rituals ( because I am fascinated with the Inca culture, I had to write this).
Quinoa is a type of grain, rich in protein and amino-acids that can 
easily replace any type of cereal. Covered with saponin which gives the grains a bitter taste, it should be washed before cooking. What I consider very interesting is the fact that Quinoa can offer an important source of calcium for bones teeth and skin. This type of grain can be consumed by those who are allergic to wheat.


For today, we tried 2 recipes with this magic, sacred Quinoa.

The first one (for greedy toddlers) is, of course, for my daughter and as I could not help myself, I added a lot of green yummies... because it's cold and I miss Spring.

For this, you will need:
- 1/2 leek or 1 spring onion
- 1 garlic clove
- a bunch of parsley leaves
- frozen peas (or fresh ones...yum)
- olive oil
-  1 cup Quinoa
For seasoning and garnishing you will need ~ lemon, yogurt, pink  Himalayan salt and any king of herbs, such as basil, rosemary, etc.~

 Tip: try not to spill the quinoa

 kitchen...
 they're unstoppable...really.  







You start by chopping the leek (or spring onion), garlic clove and the parsley leaves into small pieces. Heat the olive oil in a pot and add all the ingredients mentioned above. Cook for 2-3 minutes until they are softened After this, you can add the quinoa and the peas and cover with water. (I reckon you should use 2 cups of water). Leave on medium heat,for 15-20 minutes, until the quinoa starts sucking up the water.

Then add the seasoning you want. 
For the seasoning I used a mix of condiments:

turmeric, sage, basil, oregano,
garlic powder, 
ginger powder and rosemary.

Also, I always add a bit of pink Himalayan salt  to my daughter's meals beacuse Himalayan salt contains the same 84 trace minerals and elements that are found in the human body, that alone is quite impressive...

When it's finished, serve in a bowl leave it to chill, add a spoon of yogurt on top (I used homemade yogurt) and a couple of dashes of lemon juice. Enjoy little ones!

Back in Business

It’s been a very long time and I do apologize for not writing for such a loooong period of time….but we are back and we have some exciting news and very interesting new projects.

Mummy’s been very busy with work and Little Miss Sunshine’s been very busy with growing up…and learning so many new things, so fast! She can count, she can sing, she recognizes her favorie music videos, and we recently learned to jump.  Yesterday she turned 17 months and Oh My, we still wonder where the time flew?!?!

We cannot wait for Spring, to be honest I kind of had enough of this cold winter. Besides, Hessy has many S/S outfits that need to go out of the closet…and they need to be worn fast… size 12-18months is turning dangerously slim fit.

As we passed the puree period, struggles with the finger food and crunchy, munchie recipes appeared. Because I am a sucker for everything that’s called, or thought to be healthy, I tried a variety of recipes for toddlers.

So, for today’s lunch we tried a really great half invented- half taken from a book recipe.

Red Lentil, Sweet potato & Apple quick stew.

You will need:

Soybean Oil (chiefly a poly-unsaturated fats rich vegetable oil. Linoleic acid (omega-6) is the major poly-unsaturated fatty acid found in it. Additionally it is low in saturated fats, and free from cholesterol; making it as one of the healthiest cooking oils.

1 apple, 1  small size sweet potato, 1  small cup of red lentils

1 garlic glove

1 teaspoon of grated fresh ginger

Seasoning & Spices ( I used: pink himalayan salt, cardamon,  cinnamon, basil,

Cooking method:

Leave the cup of lentils to soak in cold water, for 20-30 minutes

Chop the sweet potato and the apple in small cubes.  In a cooking pot add a little ( 1 tablespoon) of soybean oil and heat it. Chop the garlic clove in small bits and add it to the oil for aproximately 1-2 minutes at low to medium heat. Add the chopped ingredients in the pot over the garlic and drain the lentils from the water they’ve been soaked. Over the ingredients, add 300 ml water into the pot.  Add the lentils, the grated ginger and the spices you want. Leave it to boil on medium heat for aproximately 15 minutes ( until the lentils are cooked).

Enjoy and let the Toddlers get messy. 🙂

Summer Laziness

“Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it.”

 

Please excuse us for not posting anything these last weeks but the heat got us all. During this season  we spend most of the hours outside. My beautiful earth child, I am in awe of her love of nature…For me, teaching your children to love nature is the second most important thing in life, after Love. Being outdoors helps create a sense of wonder in children, which they can carry over to other aspects of their life.Outdoor activity offers children the opportunity of fresh air and exercise. And I am sure we all know both are important to help children keep physically and mentally fit.

Modern life is too regimented and deprives children of the opportunity of exploring and learning by themselves. In this context, the role of nature to stimulate their curiosity is even more important.

In a couple of weeks we are going away on vacation in Croatia. This will be our first long drive ( 8 hours) and to be honest Mamma’s very stressed. At 10 Months my daughter loves her car seat but we never drive more than half an hour with her in the car so I guess I cannot say what  her reaction will be. We decided to departure somewhere early in the morning (I’m thinking 05.00 am).

I thought of summarizing 3 esential ideas on how to prepare on a long car journey:

  • Have enough baby necessities on board. Think of diapers, wipes, baby food, and so on. Whatever is age-appropriate, just make absolutely sure you don’t run out.
  • Have a high-quality car-seat for the baby. This is the single most important thing for the safety and comfort of your baby.
  • Ensure the long-duration comfort of the parents. They are going to have it the hardest, not the baby. This includes sitting in front if that’s the most comfortable (it usually is, in most cars), adjusting the seat properly, having enough food and drink for yourselves or just stop everytime you need, taking a leg-stretching break at least every 2 hours, and so on.

One of the most important things is pit stops. They are a key way to keep a baby happy on a road trip. Make frequent stops, so children can stretch their little legs and  during these stops: emphasize that frequent pit stops are a key way to keep a baby happy on a road trip.  Make sure to play. Get them laughing and tire them out a bit.

My daughter loves to play with water, we also went to a swimming-pool for babies only and she loved it. But will the salty water change her mind? What do we need to make our babies feel comfortable for the first time at the seaside?

It may seem as if need everything but the kitchen sink simply for a day on the beach with your baby. But, as you know, it’s tricky to travel light now you are a family. Here are some items you’ll need to have with you:

  • windbreak
  • picnic blankets
  • towels
  • sun tent
  • umbrella
  • cool bag with water and food
  • formula feeding equipment
  • sunscreen
  • sun hat and long sleeved tops
  • spare clothes for when they get wet, sandy or blown away
  • jelly or beach shoes for toddling babies
  • swimming costume for you and your baby
  • first aid kit
  • armbands, rubber ring or float suit
  • bucket, spade, beach ball

And of course, take a camera to capture your baby’s trip to the seaside!

Sun Safety and Fun

Summertime ushers in many new activities for you and your babies. Since this lovely weather turned a bit above 20 degrees, we moved outside with all the artilery.

As much as I love her golden in the sunlight, I am aware that babies under six months old should not be exposed to direct sunlight and should only be given minimal amounts of sunscreen if absolutely necessary. My baby is now 7 months and a half and we are still a bit scared to leave her play in the sun for more than 5 minutes. With all the fuss around the solar explosions, I think I have some sort of paranoia. Everytime I look at the sun (with my eyes shut) it hurts, so I imagine what it does to my little baby’s eyes. So, when it comes to baby sun safety, how much sunlight is enough sunlight? Experts recommend that individuals with fair skin get about ten minutes of sunlight each day. People with darker skin tones will need slightly longer amounts of time in the sun in order for the body to produce adequate amounts of vitamin D. Most importantly, for the body to make enough vitamin D, the skin must be bare and free from sunscreen. I say direct sunlight is important, so go outside and skip the baby sun protection for about ten minutes each day. Under you can see my baby has slightly darker skin tones and we noticed that after 10 minutes of playing in the sun, she was showing a lovely tanned skin color. Because her father has no problems getting sunburnt in the summer, I think she gets it from him…

But still, I do not care about how much Vitamin D she is getting from sunlight…I am scared. When we first noticed she is getting a tan we thought the time spent outside was too much, but everytime we go in the park or just stay outside she looks so healthy. So it must be doing her good… not to mention how well (and peacefully) she sleeps. We did a test. One day we did not go anywhere, all the activities we had were inside the house. Well…I can post a picture so you can see her reaction :))

Bored, and tired!

I will give you some tips on outdoor activities and Sun Protection:

Hydrate. Make sure your baby is sufficiently hydrated to withstand the heat and sun exposure.

Put a hat on that baby. Make sure your baby is wearing a wide-brimmed hat that provides sufficient shade and protects the ears and neck, two critical areas that are not covered with a baseball hat.

Keep your baby in the shade. If there is no natural shade, create shade with an umbrella, canopy, or even a lightweight blanket.

Avoid certain times. Avoid the peak times of sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Take baby for an early morning or later afternoon/evening walk instead. You’ll avoid the hottest part of the day and, since infants don’t sweat well, will make it easier for them to stay cool.

Use sunscreen sparingly. Limit sunscreen use to areas that cannot easily be covered or shaded, such as the hands and face. Young babies have thin skin, which can more easily absorb ingredients from sunscreen and which also is easily irritated—especially by chemical sunscreens. When you do use a sunscreen, consider one that physically blocks the sun’s rays; look for the ingredients titanium dioxide and zinc oxide as these do not usually irritate delicate skin.

…and other things such as protecting the baby’s skin when riding the car because glass does not block the UVA rays.

Baby walkers Myths

A baby walker is a device designed to help babies who cannot walk yet maneuver around their homes. The idea behind this concept is that it will keep the baby entertained for long periods of time and possibly give the baby exercise. Most of these walkers are made of plastic with a wheeled base on the bottom. Now this is the part I don’t really like…the plastic. While seeing my friend’s baby bouncing in a very colorful, eye-hurting walker I cannot help thinking if it’s doing something good or bad something to my baby’s leg muscles, is she going t walk on her toes, will she be able to walk by herself without that cloth seat in the middle of the walker…? Well, I still do not know one hundred percent, which walker I should purchase for my daughter but I did some research and though it would be helpful if I sum up the huuuge amount of ideas and opinions people have. Image This is among of the first and most commonly used models of baby walkers, from the 1920s…Although it looks pretty…yeah, for a vintage fair display, it is obviously not comfortable for the baby. Image Aside from the entertainment this toy gives a child (not the one in the picture above, obviously), parents give other reasons for using the walker such as promoting walking and providing exercise. However, up to one-third of parents have said they use the walker because they feel it will keep their infant safe. Unfortunately, none of these are true. The few studies that have been done looking at the how walkers affect development have shown that they do not affect the time at which a child learns to walk. I am sure you have seen numerous articles about walkers being bad for your children, but did you know they are actually banned in Canada? Surely, there must be something fishy about them…Putting a baby in a walker is like giving a teenager a Ferrari — definitely not recommended. That’s why, as of April 2007, Canada has banned the sale, importation and advertising of all baby walkers. It’s against the law to even sell a used baby walker at a garage sale or flea market. The purpose of the use of this tool is for increase the baby walk ability, although some pediatricians do not agree with that opinion because they think walking is a process of adaptation that will accrue in accordance with age children and the doctors also claimed that this is merely a way of producers to increase sales of their products. To support the claim, these doctors have done studies and reviews that show that Baby Walkers did not increase the infant’s ability to walk but it makes the baby suffered injuries. Warnings have been issued to parents by the American Academy of Pediatrics and some other organizations about the use of Baby Walkers.  Now, these articles are all citing the same issues, but lets be honest… the problem isn’t with the walkers. The problem is using a walker in an unsafe environment and for too long. It should be more than half an hour when your baby is under 9 months. In my opinion that is the main issue with the walkers. The few studies that have been done looking at the how walkers affect development have shown that they do not affect the time at which a child learns to walk. And in fact, most studies have shown that if there is any effect on walking, it is a delay of a few weeks. Babies who use a walker tend to have an abnormal gait at first, but this tends to resolve quickly with time. Because I am going to buy our first baby walker I did some research and Parent-assisted baby walkers are the way to go. Try the Juppy Baby Walker and skip the traditional baby walker. Babies learn to walk in part by watching and understanding how their feet and legs move. If a walker has a tray, they can’t see what’s happening with their lower body and don’t get the information they need about their motor development .Image In this case the role of parents is needed to keep their babies pay attention when using the jumper walker. Never leave your baby in a wheel walker to roam the possibility that your baby is running towards something interesting that can cause accidents resulting in injury. Also, do not leave the baby in the walker to roam close to the toilet and kitchen. If you have a swimming pool keep your baby away to a safe distance from the pool.  In general, baby walkers have gotten safer since the early 2000s, when the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission worked with manufacturers to develop better safety standards for these products. Walkers on the market now should have “stair-fall protection” — either a gripping mechanism that keeps the walker from going over the edge of a stairwell or a design that prevents the walker from fitting through a doorway. However, some manufacturers continue to ignore these standards. Also, older walkers (such as those bought secondhand) may not have these safety features. “A few minutes spent and a few steps safely taken in a walker each day won’t harm baby, but too much time in his first little car is neither safe nor healthy. We discourage the use of walkers or any device that encourages baby to rely on outside assistance for locomotion rather than on his own creativity or initiative. Walkers reverse the normal process of neurological development, giving the lower half of the body an ability that the upper half is not yet ready to cope with. Studies have shown that infants who spend a large portion of their day in walkers may exhibit delayed motor skills, especially in learning to walk correctly.”~ Dr. Sears at AskDrSears.com

All in all, Every child is different. Just like everything else, if it’s used safely and in moderation, it probably will not effect a child’s walking. I will try the jumper walker at first because my daughter tries to transmit us “it is time you teach me walk!”. But I will use it only a few minutes a day. When she will be around 9 months i will try to buy a wheeled baby walker so she can have a bit of independence. The question that remains, are walkers a no-no or is it just a matter of opinion?  I will keep you updated and see the progress after we purchase the walker.  Your very best alternative? Floor time! In today’s busy world, many babies have an immense lack of floor play time, not just due to using exersaucers (which I have just found out is a stationary play center) or jumpers, but going from the car seat to the bouncer seat to the swing to the exersaucer to the high chair and back again! Playing on the floor is the the best place for a baby to learn and to stimulate his visual, sensory, gross, fine and cognitive skills. What makes it even better is if you get down on the floor and play with him!

Ok, It’s official warm outside. It is not only the trees that are blooming or the flowers, all my vegetables in the garden are growing healthily. Leafy greens boast high amounts of iron and folate. While spinach is perhaps the best known of this group, there are many other varieties, including kale, chard, and collard greens. Brimming with folate, fiber, and calcium, broccoli is also known for its cancer-fighting properties, says dietitian Kate Geagan, author of Go Green, Get Lean. And thanks to its sulfur compounds, it has a unique flavor that can help expand your baby’s tastes.

Today for my little munchkin I chose the greenest lunch ever! So we can feel the Spring!!! I guarantee you after this recipe, your baby will not need Iron supplements .

In March you have the nicest wild spinach, and the most aromatic parsley.  What you can see the upper picture is all bought from the local market. No additives I assure you. My favorite part of the year is definitely Spring. Everything is so fresh and tasty…

So for today’s 6mnths + baby recipe I am going to show you how to make what I call The Green Explosion:

  • Fresh Salad
  • Wild Spinach
  • Spring onion
  • Broccoli
  • Parsley
  • Olive Oil

1. take the wild spinach (or you can you baby spinach) and wash it thoroughlyImage

 

2. Do the same with the Parsley and the Spring onion and brocolli.

3. In a cooking pan add a little extra virgin olive oil, the spring onion and the parsley. Stir for 2 minutes.

4. Add the spinach, Salad leaves, the broccoli and enough water just to cover it.

5. After boiled, and you can smash the broccoli with the fork just blend it and it is ready to Enjoy!

TIPS:

To give it a better taste I use Baby condiments. They contain sweet paprika, garlic, oregano, parley, basil, celery seeds. No salt or Sugar.

Who’s your Nanny?

 

 

Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love, they depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog, it merely expands the heart. If you have loved many dogs your heart is very big.Image

All my life I have been surrounded by dogs. Small, medium, too big to call it a dog, aggressive, kind, playful and many others…Because my grandfather was a vet it gave me the possibility to understand dogs better.

Saya (the Staffy) is 3 and she is the most amazing creature on this planet. When I was pregnant she already knew before me. She sniffed my belly constantly and slept with her head on my belly every time she had a chance. I was only 3 weeks pregnant. She was going to be the true best friend for my baby.

When we came back from the hospital Saya was so curious she cried all night so that we let her in the bedroom to see what that little fairy in my hand was. In the first 2-3 months Saya was not aloud in our bedroom where the baby was, we felt she should know boundaries. My daughter is 6 months and 2 weeks and still, Saya knows, the bedroom is my daughter’s territory. Usually when we go out I take my dogs with me and Saya is the only one standing so close to the pushchair, no one feels safe to come closer….I like that. I do not have to tell people that my daughter in the pushchair is not a toy.

Experts recommend that you prepare the family dog before the baby arrives. It is a very hectic time and a time of many changes when a baby arrives. In order to minimize stress for the dog and reduce the chance of an accident you can make many changes and preparations ahead of time so that the transition is easier for you and the dog.

I don’t have fingers to count how many times people told me to avoid dogs when I was pregnant…I still don’t understand. They told me “It is not good for the baby”. Saya is clean and vaccinated every 3 months anti parasites. Although I always use anti worm tablets we still go to the vet for a routine checkup. So, my dog is clean and healthy…why shouldn’t I let my daughter play with her? Reporting in the journal Pediatrics, researchers say that babies who grow up in homes with a pet — namely a dog or a cat — are less likely to get sick than children who live pet-free. The results bolster the notion that keeping infants’ environments overly sanitized isn’t good for their health. Previous research has linked the presence of pets with a lower risk of allergies among babies. At first I have to admit I was a bit skeptical, seeing my newborn baby being so fragile…But How can a person’s immune system be expected to build if they’re kept away from all the  potential allergens out there?

These are my dogs and they are our source of positive energy. Not only I have 2 nannies for my daughter but I have all the joy and happiness in the world and my house is always full of love.

For dogs who haven’t spent much time with them, babies can seem like pretty bizarre—and even frightening—creatures. They make loud, screeching noises, they smell different, they definitely don’t look like grown-up humans, and they move in strange ways.

Make sure you never leave your baby alone with the dog on the first few months no matter how much you trust your pet. Remember, you want your pet to view associating with the baby as a positive experience. To prevent anxiety or injury, never force your pet to get near the baby, and always supervise any interaction.

Cereal killer Trauma

I have been looking for information on cereal and porridge and rice and paps and…for more than 2 months. Do you know the feeling when you go to shop and you feel tempted to buy your kid all the tasty looking (on the box) cereal with all the fruits from around the world? A lot of people are telling me that when I start my infant on solids that I must begin with baby cereal. However, I’ve heard a few others say that fruits or vegetables are healthier to start my baby on. Now which was is the right way? This is why I call it a trauma…

I decided on giving my baby solids when she was 4 months and few days. We started with root vegetables such as carrots, parsnip, and gradually added a second meal which consisted of cereal,mentioning that the milk was the base meal.   Between meals I gave her different fruit juices. Breastfeeding provides the best nutrition and protection from illness for your baby. For most infants, breast-milk is all that is needed for the first 4 to 6 months. Many mothers continue to breastfeed after 6 months and then give other foods as well. I did this at four months, because the breast-milk wasn’t enough for my gourmand daughter.

So this is the Rice cereal we started with, I can be done with breast milk, formula milk and it has no added sugar or gluten. She loved it. I would like to mention that we were searching for cereal that do not have formula milk in composition. |You know the ones that have Milk Cereal written on the box.

The second one she loves is the Topfer cereal. This time you have a little bit of banana taste and the price is amazingly low. Image

This is also prepared with milk. Again I do not like to mix the formula milk from different brands. Therefor I can choose whatever cereal I want and don’t have to worry about mixing them and give my baby a boom of chemicals. I always choose the cereal without milk in the composition so I can use the same milk all the time. Mentioning that we use Aptamil at the moment

So when you look for cereal for your baby, its very simple the “only water” ones have milk in them. 

If you are a super mama try making your own cereal at home, so you are sure it is all bio without any surprises. Here you have some recipes for that. One day after opening a new box and realizing it was barely half full I thought to myself, why am I paying so much for a box of rice cereal when I can easily make it homemade for pennies per serving? And so I did.

1. Place oats in a food processor, pulse for 15 to 30 seconds or until finely ground.

2. Store the oat powder in a sealed container in the refrigerator or freezer or in a cool dark place for up to 3 months.

To make 1 serving for a 5-9 month old baby.

Bring 1/2 cup of water to a boil and sprinkle in 2 tbsp of the ground oats and ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, if desired.

Whisk continuously for 30 seconds and then occasionally for 3-5 minutes or until the mixture is thick and creamy.

*Accompaniments: * Breast milk or formula can be added to thin the mixture
